Discover Port Townsend History: Visit Museum, Rothschild House

Updated: 4 days ago

Nestled in the heart of Port Townsend, a National Historic Landmark District, the Jefferson County Historical Society (JCHS) is dedicated to preserving and sharing the stories that shape this unique region. Through immersive exhibitions, historic sites, and engaging programs, JCHS connects visitors and the community to the rich cultural tapestry of Jefferson County.

Museum of Art + History

Located in Port Townsend’s historic 1892 City Hall, the Museum of Art + History brings the past to life through thought-provoking exhibitions, local stories, and dynamic programming. Visitors can explore a blend of art and history, discovering everything from maritime heritage to contemporary interpretations of the region’s evolving identity. The museum is also undergoing an exciting transformation through the Newly Imagined Museum of Art + History project, ensuring greater accessibility and fresh experiences for all.

The Rothschild House

Perched above downtown with a commanding view of the water, the Rothschild House Museum is a rare time capsule of 19th-century Port Townsend life. Built in 1868 by prominent merchant D.C.H. Rothschild, this Victorian home remains largely untouched, filled with original furnishings and family heirlooms that provide a deeply personal glimpse into the town’s early years.

Research Center + Collections

For those who love to dig deeper into history, the Research Center + Collections Building is a hub for archival research, genealogy, and artifact preservation. With over 500,000 items in its collection—including historic photographs, documents, and rare artifacts—JCHS offers a wealth of resources for scholars, researchers, and the historically curious.

More Ways to Engage

JCHS offers walking tours, history hikes, and public programs throughout the year, inviting visitors to step beyond the exhibits and explore history firsthand. From Legends + Lore tours to hands-on community events, there are countless ways to engage with Port Townsend’s past.

Support Local History

As a nonprofit, JCHS relies on community support to preserve, interpret, and share Jefferson County’s history. Visitors can become members for year-round free admission, donate to support exhibits and preservation, or volunteer to be part of the history in the making.
