Construction Update: Progress on Museum Renovations (March 3-8)

Updated: Mar 6

As we continue our work to make the Museum of Art + History more accessible and welcoming, this week marks some exciting progress. With electricians arriving on-site, painters moving into public areas, and key structural modifications underway, we’re getting closer to reopening in April!

Painting Progress: Public Spaces in Focus

The painting crew will be working in the front office and first-floor elevator lobby at the start of the week. On Friday, March 7, they will have a large crew tackling the entire lobby—which means that the historic City Hall entrance will be refreshed for all our visitors!

Carpentry & Structural Work

  • The team will continue work on the Fire Hall opening and adjacent stairwell.

  • Once the electrician relocates some wiring, they may begin work on the stairwell between the lobby and basement .

  • This week, they expect to finish framing the timber doorway between the Men’s Jail and Marshal’s Office, once the concrete has fully cured.

  • Friday, March 7: Major milestone! Crews will be cutting masonry in the basement to raise the low-clearance doorways to a safer and more accessible height.

Electrical Work Begins

Electricians arrive March 4 and will start by moving wiring and conduit that need to be relocated before demolition work continues. Additional tasks include:

  • Installing more lighting in both stairwells for improved visibility.

  • Adjusting surface-mounted conduit in the basement to accommodate the ongoing renovations.

Looking Ahead

We’re making big strides toward our goal of creating a more accessible, inclusive, and engaging museum space—and we can’t wait to share the results with you.

Stay tuned for more updates, and mark your calendars for our April reopening!
