What is a collection? Why do you often see people who work in museums wearing gloves? How do giant objects on display in museums end up there?
We hear some variation on these questions a lot! So, a few years ago, we enlisted Zula, a Chimacum High School student (now a college student! 🤯), to take us through the basics of museum collections. We also enlisted some young friends to share a little about what they collect.
Something we hope you take away from this video is that collecting is very human! Maybe you collect feathers like Zula, or rocks and minerals like Oliver. What about vinyl records, mugs, or bumper stickers?
No matter your age and whatever the object, something many of us share is a love for collecting items. Sometimes, we collect items that we like learning about or use regularly. Others might be associated with a loved one or a cherished memory.
What makes museum collections special is that they are a community resource. As Zula says, “Museums are places that save and take care of things to share with all of us.” If you value preservation, care, and access to the thousands of items that your local museum holds in public trust, you can support that this month!
Thanks to all who’ve contributed to our summer fundraiser so far, we have raised over 63% of our $5,000 goal! If you haven’t already, consider showing your love for collections with a gift. Your contributions directly support the cost of special supplies that enable us to preserve collections so they may be accessed for years to come.
